For the love of Lisa

In 2004, Lisa was diagnosed with ALS. It began with a little drooling.

About ten years ago, my mom had some cosmetic surgery on her face. In 2004, after experiencing slight drooling, she thought perhaps her chin implant had damaged some of the nerves in ther lower face and was causing this drooling. Several doctors and tests later, the results came back with devastating news. Mom had ALS. But, what was this? Of course, we all heard of it...that famous baseball player, Lou Gehrig had it. I quickly, got on the computer and did my research. I learned it was even worse that I thought. Fastforward 3 year later, mom is in the end stages of the disease and is confined to her hospital bed and armchair. Never, to go to the park, beach or even friends house again.

It has been very difficult to see the slow and drawn out way that ALS has taken control of my mom. Once a energentic and healthy women, she is now a shell of the person she was. Some of her favorite things to do in life are now a distance memory. Things are further complicated by her divorce and the physical distance bewtween us. I live in NY and she in CA. I try to keep a strong, positive and happy demeanor in the face of such sadness. When I think of the life she now lives and the future she will not be part of, there are no words to express my sorrow - only tears. I only pray that one day, we find a cure so that not one more family has to suffer with this illness like we have.
