Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow & breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2-5 years. Every 90 minutes, a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS; every 90 minutes, another loses his or her battle. ALS can strike anyone, and there is currently no cure.
My interest in ALS guided my decision to pursue my doctorate in physical therapy. As a PT, I’ve worked directly with patients in the mid-late stages of ALS, & witnessed the devastating effects of this disease on patients and their families. For the last 5 years, I’ve walked and will continue to walk on behalf of my late & current patients who do not have the opportunity to walk themselves.
